The Gold Coast is the sixth largest city in Australia and one of the fastest growing regions in our country. The northern growth corridor is characterised by high proportions of families, children and young people. In 2006, the population in Northern Gold Coast was 207 347 residents. It is projected to grow by 141 571 residents (68 per cent) to 348 918 by 2021. This is a larger increase than any other local government area in Queensland, with the exception of Brisbane City. (Statistics taken from Department of Local Government and Planning and Gold Coast City Council, September 2011).

The Northern Gold Coast is known primarily for its theme park attractions including Dream World, Movie World, Sea World, Wet N Wild and the Outback Spectacular, all spread out from around the Pacific Highway. The Northern Gold Coast offers a variety of attractions including a unique zorbing experience, rolling down a hill in an enclosed ball, located at Pimpama on the Gold Coast near Dream World and go kart adventures in Upper Coomera. The Northern Gold Coast is also home to some of the premium golf resorts including Hope Island and Sanctuary Cove. South Stradbroke Island is just off the Northern Gold Coast accessed from Runaway Bay and Marina Mirage at Main Beach, offering an escape from the busy lifestyle on the mainland. Here you can enjoy abundant bird life, rainforest walks or for the more adventurous rock climbing, canoeing, windsurfing and para-sailing.

The ever growing area of the Northern Gold Coast, particularly including the area as far south as Pacific Pines to Ormeau in the north, has been the focus of many planned future developments. The Coomera Town Centre and the Upper Coomera Community Hub will provide the ever growing Northern Gold Coast corridor with infrastructure and facilities to meet the needs of the community. The Coomera Town Centre will encourage a strong base of government, commercial, retail, residential and tourist and entertainment development, supported by core regional services such as secondary and tertiary education facilities, medical services and civic uses. The Upper Coomera Community Hub shall comprise the following components: library, multi-purpose community centre, aquatic facilities with focus on water play/social uses, public plaza areas, walking and cycling trails with internal and district links and social areas including a small park area.
